What an awesome day we had with our granddaughters today. For the very first time in their lives, they saw American pelicans down at the Carseland Weir. We got lots of pictures - Matia even took a ton of photos, which I'm "marking" for her so she will know which ones are hers. We also saw snipes, red-winged blackbirds, and even an avocet. And, as expected, we saw mallard ducks and Canada geese, too; these birds are fairly common, but when you view them through the eyes of a child, it does feel like we're seeing even the common birds for the very first time.
I'll upload the photos tomorrow and share some of them here and at
The Camper, so you can enjoy our precious memories with us.

Surprisingly, we actually made it all the way down to Little Bow, and there, the kids played on the swings and climbed around on the climbing gym. Matia did really well, considering the fact that her little leg is still healing from the double break she had a month or so ago. She hobbles around, and when she gets excited, she hops. But she seems to understand that no matter how excited she gets, she's not allowed to outright run, yet, so she does the best she can. She's one smart little cookie, that's for sure.
While Roger hung out with Matia on the swings and climbing gym, Nikki really had me running. When she wasn't trying to mimic her sister, she was trying to take off and go exploring. It was all I could do to keep up with her; when she gets going, that little girl can MOVE.

We all had a blast, though, and when we were getting ready to head for the van to come home, we even got a special treat from Mother Nature: two gorgeous yearling muledeer does showed up ahead of us and were trotting towards the coulee slope.
I wish you could have seen Matia's face. She stood rooted to the spot, her mouth hanging open, eyes round as saucers... It was hilarious and sweet at the same time...

Anyway, I just wanted to come in to do a quick update on the day trip before I head to bed. I'll post some pics tomorrow and update
The Camper, too. G'night!
